Moving Pool Tables

If you are the owner of a pool table, you probably either use it all the time, or not at all. If you are the latter, you are going to probably try to sell it when you sell your house, because moving a pool table is expensive and a little complicated. Some moving companies gloss over it as if they all know how to handle them, but that just is not the case.

Pool tables are either regular, or slate-top. Regular pool tables require special handling by themselves, and cannot be “stacked around or on” in the moving truck, which normally creates additional fees over and above the actual volume taken up by the table. Even if you just have a regular table, I would suggest asking what the extra fees are. Of course nobody wants to pay extra fees for anything, but in this case it is not necessarily a bad thing because it proves that your mover is actually acknowledging that it needs special handling. If they charge no fee, then I would actually be concerned.

A slate top table is a totally different animal. These slate tops normally come in 1 or 3 pieces, and require full disassembly at origin and reassembly at delivery. The slate also MUST be crated. A 1 piece slate is larger and awkwardly heavy, so this version is a little more expensive to handle. The 3 piece slate still needs to be crated, but is easier for the specialists to maneuver. A moving company that is properly handling your slate top pool table will be charging you for both disassembly and crating at origin, and then uncrating and reassembly at delivery. Usually these fees will range from $700 to $1200 depending on your location. Pool table specialists don’t grow on trees, so we normally use a national company that handles specialty moving projects and send them out a couple days before the move happens. If you are lucky enough to live relatively close to a pool table company, you may be able to get this stuff done a little cheaper.
So although it always costs extra, make sure if you are moving a pool table of any kind that it is properly addressed by your movers, and that they are taking the necessary precautions to ensure safe handling of it.

One quick pro-tip: If you are going to be moving a slate top table, the reassembly time at delivery is a great time to get the table top re-felted if you were planning on doing that, since the table is already disassembled and you can kill 2 birds with 1 stone.
